Everybody has seen the crash test dummies and knows exactly what they look like. The purpose of a crash test dummy is in the name; they test the effects that a car crash will have on a human. This is incredibly important when trying to ascertain the safety rating for a vehicle and in the development of such vehicles. The dummies are strapped into the car and driven at 30mph towards a solid wall. Their motion before, during and after the crash are recorded using a high speed camera and then replayed in slow motion for the scientists to study. This method ensures that the cars do not cause serious injuries when they are released, as they can then be adapted and changed. It is a pain free system that makes you fully aware of how your car will react in the event of a crash.
The idea of testing the safety of a car during a crash has been around since the 1930s, when human cadavers were used. Being essentially a dead weight, these bodies reacted to the crashes as a living body would and provided knowledge on the safety of the car. However, humanitarian doubts were raised during the 1950s, so crash test dummies were sought after to replace the bodies. They are perfectly proportioned and weighted to as to simulate a human exactly. The most modern dummy is known as THOR, and is complete with spine and pelvis; the 2 bone structures most likely to be damaged in the event of an accident.
